Murder sudoku clues explained, one by one
Every clue is about a group of squares: where someone can be, or where they cannot. Reading them well is half the case. All the examples come from the daily case of 13 October 2026, a six-by-six hotel, and the plan marks them the way the app does: a green ring where the person can be, a cross where the clue rules them out.

- D1 barrel
- A2 desk
- E2 chair
- C4 gramophone
- E4 candelabra
- A5 stove
- F6 palm tree
Somewhere in a row or column
«Lily was somewhere in column F»
The most direct one: the person is on some square of that row or column. Crossed with another clue, it often gives you the exact square.

In a room, or not
«Beatrice was not in the Kitchen»
This is about the whole room. Positive, the person is on one of its squares; negative, as here, you can cross the whole room out for them.

In the same row as a piece of furniture
«Iris was in the same row as the barrel»
The furniture's row, not counting its own square or other furniture, since nobody stands on it.

In the same column as a piece of furniture
«Iris was not in the same column as the gramophone»
The same, but upright. Negative, it rules the whole column out for that person.

Next to a piece of furniture
«Nadia stood next to the stove»
The squares touching it above, below, left or right. Diagonals do not count, and only inside the furniture's own room.

Nowhere near a piece of furniture
«Nadia was nowhere near the candelabra»
"Nowhere near" rules out those same squares. Notice that F4 is not lit even though it touches the candelabra: it is on the other side of a wall, and walls cut it off.

On a particular seat
«Alma was on the chair»
Chairs, sofas and beds are the only furniture someone can be on: sitting. This clue says which one.

Sitting down, without saying where
«Alma was sitting down»
The person is on one of the seats on the plan. When there are few, like here with a single chair, the clue is almost as good as naming the square.

How to use them
- Start with the ones that say where someone was: they usually leave few squares.
- Cross two clues about the same person. A row and a column give a single square.
- Negative clues help later, once few options are left.
- You do not need them all: sometimes two say the same thing in different words.
